Historians now question the grand narratives that reinforced nationalism, and thereby modernism. Postmodernism in the history profession is simply that, showing that abstract categories such as race, class, gender, and nations are social constructs that feed into a grand narrative. We built them and they changed over time, to the point of making them appear natural. So postmodernists deconstruc...

All of these histories challenge nationalism at its very core, by questioning the nature of boundaries and nations themselves, allowing historians like Benedict Anderson to show that nations in the modern conception of them are only a 19th century invention, often created by the history profession itself. This fundamentally undermines the very basis of not only orthodoxy, but revisionism too, f...

Overdetermination is when something in history is described in such a way as to forget contingency; systems over individuals. The border between the United States and Mexico is an incredibly contentious subject. It is an unending controversy. But learning some history may alleviate that issue, at least a modicum. Our two countries are connected, but separate. There has never been an all-encompassing nor correct perspective on the matter. Many people did transcend national borders though, especially through the spread of ideas and movements. International history is about how nations interact, while comparative history compares different nations, but transnationalism is about how things transcend individual nations, interlinking them through cultural diffusion. Borderlands history looks at areas where there is competing or layer...

The Armenian Genocide took place between 1915-1918, but it had a long history leading up to it. After decades of ethnic warfare, Young Turks (ordered by the three pashas of the CUP party) systematically murdered 2-3 million Christians of Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek dissent during World War I. Turkey then instituted denial of this event, which continues to this day. Such ignorance will not be ...

See the next short for the subaltern studies. Some kinds of nationalism only arose to fight imperialism. As empires decolonized, historians sought to illustrate how previous history had supported colonial subjugation. Thanks. Historiography is often taught by having you read the source and then discuss it, seminar style. Problem is, that doesn't guarantee that students will get at the core idea, rendering it impossible to fully grasp until students go outside the core curriculum. I know all too well from being just as confused as you were, but luckily I was assigned the Gunn book in my description, which helped a lot. I'm class, everytime someone referenced it, we said, "I'm pulling my Gunn out." This was at Cal Poly in 2014, and somehow no one found it offensive, LOL

We have very few powerful people with bad intentions who seek to confuse our young minds into forgetting the simplicity of freedom and happiness with fantastic stories of injustice leaving out the beautiful unity and struggles to bring our freedoms into existence. We should respect our elders and the horrors they endured so we could live in such peace that we spend our time thinking of things like this and we are not bleeding on battlefield or burying our loved ones from starvation from poverty to keep the landlord’s power from our own prejudice god bless

First off post-modernism is a thing.... Not Cypher's thing, but a thing that existed before his formal history education. Post-modernism (in this context) is a construct of the history profession to describe the time after we viewed history through the lens of other social constructs. The period of viewing things through the lens of social constructs was called modernism. Hence post-modernism (at least according to the video). Now all that said please point out the thing that was Communist related and that very brief video. The video defined a word, it talked about history in the abstract, and the history profession. At no point did I hear anything about social economic policy or controlling the means of production.

I was born and raised in Alaska. The state is overall incredibly weird in terms of politics and cultural attitudes relative to the continental US. Even though most people here have no direct connection to the South, there is some resonance in the spirit of rebellion against the state inspired by Lost Cause mythology. I think this is a combination of both the significant libertarian slant of the politics here, and they also see a closer connection to a stereotypical lifestyle of the south given that the south has much more rural populations and smaller/less aggregates major metropolitan areas. I mean you don’t hear about country boys/girls nearly as much in reference to the northern states as you do to the south, and a large portion of people who live in AK, even those living in suburbs or small cities, consider themselves to be country folk. But anyways, education on the civil war was interesting because the textbooks we used and the general curriculum about the civil war in class did not include lost cause talking points. However, i have had multiple teachers who said things like “the civil war wasn’t about slavery” (if they clarified most would say it was about keeping the union together) or talking about just how damn honorable and righteous Robert E Lee was. Then I’d have other teachers who would say that it was about slavery, and they would make no attempts to idolize the confederacy or its military leaders. Needless to say, it was a bit confusing to go back and forth on the ideological basis of the Civil War basically every time it was covered by a new teacher. Thankfully, i was not someone who bought into the bullshit for long and was able to learn what the actual truth was (there was a phase for a bit in middle school and first couple years of highschool where i didn’t know who i wanted to be and ended up going along with politics i now find to be incredibly superficial and badly informed, the state still is a red state even with the libertarianism so lots of conservative attitudes were still prevalent). I can only imagine how difficult it would be to accept you had been misinformed if you spent your entire childhood and adolescence being taught the Lost Cause narrative.

I'm from Arizona and had to take 2 years of Arizona history in 1975-76 and I've never heard of the Pleasant valley war until this moment. I _have_ heard the name Tuxberry... I hope I spelled that correctly...and that they fought over grazing rights or something, I'm not sure, but I think I heard that name on another old west oriented UA-cam channel, not at school. We complain about underfunded schools now and I agree, they are. Both my sister's are at least master's level special ed teachers, but not in Arizona, the pay was so low that they both had to go back to retail, for a $2.10 per hour minimum wage because they made more money. It's pretty gross, but public education in this country has always been grossly inadequate, that's why people who blame the government or private businesses for a variety of perceived wrongs don't know how their own government, or economy, works. I realize some districts and states are better than other's, but until the mid 1980's that I'm aware of, the humanities are almost entirely useless not because they're not needed, but because the curriculum is so utterly inadequate and filled with the so called "patriotic education" that Republicans are calling for now.

I can't let this go, and yes, I do have background in this particular subject. One reason, perhaps the major reason for the _name_ "national socialist" is because socialism was becoming very popular with destitute German workers and the monied elites, they never like that. So the party was christened "the national socialist German workers party" to sway votes towards the Nazi's. Just sayin'.

This was a very informative video! As an undergraduate student, I read “They Can Live in the Desert but Nowhere Else” by Ronald Suny, which is an excellent must-read on the Armenian Genocide. It’s interesting that you mention the role of Armenian nationalism as almost being one of the causes of the Genocide, because Suny largely dismisses this. He argues that above all else, the Young Turks were empire preservers, desperate to hold on to their power/empire in a rapidly changing world of nation states. In the context of the First World War, they came to believe that the Armenians were a threat, despite the fact that Armenian desertion rates in the Ottoman Army were very low and despite the fact that Armenians were always considered a “loyal millet” of the empire. Events like the Battle of Sarikamish during WWI (which you alluded to) were enough evidence for the Young Turks to conjure up an image of Armenian disloyalty, and for them to convince themselves that to preserve the empire, Armenians had to be systematically eradicated. In the historiography of the Genocide, it certainly butts heads with some of the conventional thinking.
